Above the Comox Harbour sits a small indie game studio that has just hit a major milestone with their game, Shell Shockers. Blue Wizard Digital’s game, Shell Shockers, has just hit 200 million total lifetime players, making it the biggest web game in Canada.
Blue Wizard’s marquee game, is a low-polygon, “first-person egger” where players shoot and splat combat ready eggs rather than humanoid figures.
Along with its incredible Canadian milestone, Shell Shockers has also become one of the biggest web games in the world, surpassing games like Angry Birds, the Battlefield series or Elder scrolls. Even more than the total number of copies of all Final Fantasy games sold across the entire franchise since the 1990s, and more than 5 times the population of Canada.
The game is mostly played by young teens. Due to it being a web based game, played in a web browser, the player does not require a powerful gaming computer to play, just quick reflexes. Shell Shockers is free to play, which makes it more largely accessible to gamers.
Blue Wizard’s founder and chief developer, Jason Kapalka, has a solid track record of making popular games. He currently sits at number 82 of IGN’s list of the top 100 video game creators of all time, and was inducted into the Video Game Hall of Fame in 2020. Kapalka was a cofounder of PopCap (Plants vs Zombies, Peggle) and the chief designer of Bejeweled, the original match-3 game that became the pastime of a generation.
