Chase Fire Rescue was called in to assist the RCMP on a call of a pickup truck upside down in Shuswap Lake near St. Ives.

A pickup truck and its occupants went for an unexpected swim after making a wrong turn.

Early on Aug. 17, at approximately 7:39 a.m., the Chase RCMP received a report of a black pickup truck upside down in Shuswap Lake along Seymour Arm Main Forest Service Road near St. Ives.

Officers responded along with the BC Ambulance Service and Chase Fire Rescue (CFR) where they located the truck with its cab "submerged and severely damaged." CRF members were able to access the truck and confirmed no one was inside.

"Police later contacted the registered owner, who advised that his teenage son and a friend had been in the vehicle when it left the road," Const. Sarah Van Wilgenburg said in a media release. "Fortunately, both occupants were able to escape the crash with only minor injuries."

The two individuals involved said they didn't realize they needed to report the incident, and apologized for the diversion of emergency resources.

"RCMP reminds the public that all motor vehicle collisions resulting in property damage, injury, or where a vehicle is left in an unsafe position must be reported to police without delay," Van Wilgenburg added. "Prompt reporting ensures public safety and allows emergency services to respond appropriately."

Several Good Samaritans also remained at the scene while waiting for emergency services, and did their best to help any potential occupants, with the RCMP thanking them for their "concern and efforts to help."
