Cyclists cautioned about month of logging coming for Revelstoke mountain

Revelstoke Cycling Association says forest harvesting begins after Labour Day weekend, 3 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays

Bikers should take note that end-of-summer logging operations are kicking into gear at Revelstoke's Mount MacPherson for a month starting next week, but minimally impacting recreational trails, according to a local cycling group.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 27, the Revelstoke Cycling Association (RCA) advised that forest harvesting begins at the mountain's upper trail network on the weekdays following the Labour Day weekend.

This comes one week later than previously indicated in RCA's trail report. Logging will run from 3 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays through most or all of September, with no activity planned for weekends, according to the association.

"The cutblocks don't directly impact any of our trails," RCA said on Facebook. However, because the Beaver Tail route intersects with a forest service road at the edge of one cutblock, it "will be closed for a few days only during harvesting hours while logging takes place in the immediate vicinity."

Beaver Tail provides a shortcut between longer routes such as Berm Donor, Dusty Beaver, Break-a-Leg, and Nordic Glide Road.

Foresters will additionally carry out log hauling along Nordic Glide Road and Tantrum Forest Service Road.

"Signs will be placed on Tantrum and Flowdown where they cross the haul road," RCA noted. "Please look out for logging trucks if you're riding those trails during operating hours."

These harvesting operations come following Black Press Media's reporting earlier this August that BC Timber Sales has remapped several dozen hectares of MacPherson's upper slopes that it previously zoned on the Forest Operations Map in 2022.

However, as Wildsight Revelstoke shared, the provincial lumber licensee recently scaled back its proposed logging tenure after the environmental organization raised concerns again about the impacts of cutblocks for nearby recreational trails.

B.C.'s Ministry of Forests had shared that one of its recent logging licences was auctioned last spring and will be harvested this fall or winter, though didn't specify which one. Another licence currently sits in the development stage, slated for auction next summer.

The two MacPherson cutblocks RCA has indicated for September's logging work are K6YF and K6YD, which according to the Forest Operations Map cover 12.72 and 5.36 hectares, respectively.

RCA added it will provide further updates should the logging plans for MacPherson this September change.
