Penticton artist鈥檚 painting represents Canadian identity

Jan Crawford said artwork is an expression of Canadian nationalism

A Penticton artist has a painting with a Canadian sovereignty theme.

Jan Crawford鈥檚 painting, Preserving the Canadian Maple, features maple leaves in a canning jar.

She said the painting is part of a new series on preserving Canada鈥檚 identity.

鈥淔rom a political shift in alliance with our southern neighbours, an unexpected outcome of shared beliefs and values has emerged with our country becoming united in resolve to defend Canadian identity,鈥 she said.

Crawford, who has been painting for the past three decades, said the leaves in the jar represent Canada's identity with diversity. A single red maple leaf emerging at the top of the jar is the focal point of the painting, she said.

鈥淭his painting is an expression of our nationalism and our preserved identity,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t is critical that all Canadians continue to evolve with freedom of expression, coast to coast.鈥

The 2018 painting, in acrylic, measures 71 by 97 centimetres.

Crawford is a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists. Her works have been exhibited at Canada House Gallery and Hambleton Galleries.
