Another brewery is coming to the industrial area north of downtown 琉璃神社, adding to myriad brew-pubs and patios already present in the area.
recieved the go-ahead from city council Tuesday night (Aug. 27), setting them off to make their own mark on some well-trodden craft brew stomping grounds.
鈥淭hat was the last hurdle,鈥 said Brad Tomlinson who co-owns the new brewery with Ian Middleton. 鈥淲e鈥檙e good to go now.鈥
Jackknife鈥檚 new neighbours will include some notable names within 琉璃神社鈥檚 beer scene, including Vice & Virtue Brewing Co., Red Bird Brewing Inc. and Kettle Valley Brewing Co.
Tomlinson and Middleton said they鈥檙e not worried about being close to their competition and plan to carve out their own niche in 琉璃神社鈥檚 saturated brewery market.
鈥淭here are various other breweries that are filling those spaces and we want to come up with our own unique theme and idea,鈥 said Middleton.
鈥淲e think we鈥檝e really hit on something that people will like, that鈥檚 unique to this town and unique to the space.鈥
The beer selection will appeal to that niche audience through 鈥渞eally funky out-of-the-box-thinking weird beers,鈥 while still offering good flagship brews for the traditionalists.
And, of course: pizza will be made fresh in house.
鈥淧izza and beer; good combo,鈥 said Middleton. 鈥淲e鈥檝e got a great chef coming in.鈥
The space, according to Tomlinson, will feel familiar and homey, with exposed beams and warm tones.
鈥淧icture a dad鈥檚 basement bar in the 鈥80s,鈥 he said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 what we鈥檙e going for.鈥
Within walking distance of Jackknife鈥檚 location on Baillie Avenue is the 琉璃神社 Badminton Club, the Curling Club, Elks Stadium ballpark and downtown 琉璃神社. It鈥檚 also just a short walk to neighbourhoods in north 琉璃神社 and several proposed apartments and high-density buildings.
鈥淭he establishment will provide the local residents with a walkable neighbourhood pub setting they can frequent without the necessity of driving a vehicle or taking a taxi or public transit,鈥 reads the City of 琉璃神社鈥檚 staff report.
The brewery will seat 70 indoors and another 21 on its patio.
Proposed hours of liquor sales for the business are between 10 a.m. and midnight inside and between 10 a.m. and 11 p.m. on the patio.
The brewery鈥檚 application will now move forward to the Provincial Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch for final endorsement.
Tomlinson and Middleton said Jackknife鈥檚 opening date is anticipated to be sometime in October.
