Tribute to Canadian music icon takes Vernon stage

John Paul Byrne and band pay tribute to the late Gordon Lightfoot at Vernon's Performing Arts Centre May 3

If you could read his mind, Steffan Clements would say John Paul Byrne's version of a Canadian music staple is, well, "beautiful."

Clements' father, Terry Clements, was the late Gordon Lightfood's lead guitarist for more than four decades. When Clements heard Byrne do Lightfoot's legendary song If You Could Read My Mind, the son told Byrne, "You just sang that song better than anybody I've ever heard. You sound just like him."

Fans of Gordon Lightfoot are invited to a special evening at the Vernon and District Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, May 3, as local singer-songwriter artist Byrne pays tribute to the Canadian icon in his much-lauded If You Could Read My Mind: The Gordon Lightfoot Tribute Show.

Byrne, known for his uncanny ability to channel Lightfoot鈥檚 rich baritone and poignant storytelling, promises an experience that feels like stepping back into the intimate concert halls of the 1970s.

Having captivated audiences across the Okanagan with sold-out performances, the Lightfoot Tribute Show has been celebrated for its authenticity and emotional depth, drawing comparisons to Lightfoot鈥檚 original performances.

One reviewer noted, 鈥淚t鈥檚 as if Gordon Lightfoot himself is on stage, sharing the songs that defined an era.鈥

From beloved classics like Beautiful and Early Morning Rain to the evocative ballad The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Byrne鈥檚 performance is a heartfelt homage to one of Canada鈥檚 greatest musical icons.

Clements鈥 father joined the Lightfoot band as lead guitarist in 1970 and remained with the band until his passing in 2011, playing a pivotal role in shaping the sound of Lightfoot鈥檚 music. His smooth, melodic guitar style is prominent on many of Lightfoot鈥檚 major albums, such as Sundown and Summertime Dream.

For the die-hard Lightfoot fan, Byrne channels Lightfoot not only in tone but presence, having recently grown a Gord-esque moustache.

鈥淥h, wow, you sound just like him and have his look too,鈥 said a recent concert goer.

Best known for his intimate caf茅-style performances, Byrne is set to take his Lightfoot tribute to new heights in Vernon, backed by a talented band that captures the essence of Lightfoot鈥檚 legendary sound. The five-piece ensemble captures the same spirit and musicality that defined Lightfoot鈥檚 distinctive sound, blending folk, country and rock elements into a resonant performance.

Following the upcoming tribute in Vernon, Byrne will continue his tour with shows throughout B.C. and Alberta.
