Revelstoke's pair of aquatic talent at the Special Olympics BC (SOBC) Summer Games made a splash in Prince George last week, placing high in all their events.
Yorke Parkin, 17, and Sean Moore, 43, drove eight hours north last Thursday, July 10, with family supporters to each compete in several swim events at the Prince George Aquatic Centre, for SOBC's first summer games in eight years.
Following the opening ceremony on Thursday in the company of nearly 900 other athletes, where Parkin and Moore sported red to represent Region 2 for Thompson-Okanagan, they made waves the following two days scooping up seven medals.
On Friday, July 11, for the 100-metre breaststroke, Moore placed third in his category (M1 division) and Parkin scored first in his bracket (M5) with a time nine seconds faster than the runner-up. Parkin also notched second place in the 100-metre individual medley (M3).
They didn't lose steam the following Saturday, July 12, with Moore landing fourth in the 100-metre freestyle (M6) and achieving second in the 50-metre butterfly (M1), just three seconds behind the leader.
Parkin, who last March also turned heads with a triple-gold-medal feat for skiing at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Italy, nailed second place in both 50-metre freestyle (M9) and 50-metre backstroke (M7). He also finished in third place for 50-metre breaststroke (M5).
After a triumphant end to the week for both athletes — Moore decorated with one bronze and one silver medal, and Parkin sporting one bronze, three silver and one gold — they've now qualified for next year's Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Medicine Hat, Alta.
Champions of those events in 2026 will subsequently head on to the 2027 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Santiago, Chile.
