Wildfire season ignites test evacuation in Vernon

Search and Rescue crews exercise full scale mock scenario in Foothills

Vernon Search and Rescue volunteers exercise a mock evacuation in the Foothills.

It's hoped they never have to, but Vernon Search and Rescue (VSAR) teams are ready to assist should a wildfire threaten the area.

"Our role with interface wildfires is to assist with door-to-door delivery of evacuation alerts and notifications," VSAR said.

To help volunteers remain as efficient at this as possible, they recently spent an evening executing a full-scale mock evacuation scenario.

Descending on the Foothills neighbourhood, crews knocking door-to-door to introduce themselves to residents and describe what would happen in a real evacuation situation, and got reacquainted with the real-time tracking software many SAR teams around the province are now using.

"A very special thanks to the welcoming homeowners who took our unannounced interruption of your evening all in stride," VSAR said. "There's nothing better than a live event to help us knock the cobwebs off after the winter."
