The Ryga Arts Festival celebrates the works of George Ryga, an internationally known Canadian writer.
Ryga was born to Ukrainian immigrant parents in Deep Creek, Alta., on July 27, 1932. When he was 30, he moved with his family to Summerland, where he lived until his death in 1987.
His early novels dealt with the harsh life of Ukrainian immigrants. Other novels and plays deal with issues connected to social justice.
His works included novels, short stories, poetry, song lyrics and plays for stage, radio and screen.
