Sicamous Fire Rescue responds to 23 calls in July 16 storm

Cleanup efforts continue, cordoned off properties remain hazardous

When Wednesday's storm rolled into town, Sicamous Fire Rescue (SFR) rolled out in response.

Throughout the night on July 16, the SFR responded to a total of 23 calls during the severe storm, which had a special weather advisory from Environment Canada warning of winds up to 70 km/h.

The calls included elevator rescues, wires down, assisting residents and clearing debris from roads to restore safe access. In a social media post, the SFR said cleanup efforts are continuing today, and advised that some properties remain hazardous due to downed trees and other debris.

"The public is asked not to enter any unauthorized areas that have been cordoned off by Sicamous Fire Rescue or other emergency personnel, as several active investigations and assessments are still underway," the post reads. "Thank you for staying clear so that SFR can continue to assist in the response to yesterday's storm."

The response, however, was a joint effort, with the SFR crediting BC Hydro, BC Emergency Health Services and the District of Sicamous who worked alongside their crews. The district confirmed that in another post stating that public works was out late last night and back at it today.

"From clearing obstructed roadways and restoring power to ensuring the reliability of our water system," the post states. "We couldn鈥檛 have done it without the dedicated team at the District of Sicamous, emergency response partners and local contractors who stepped up to help."
