Significant changes could be coming to the South Okanagan Events Centre (SOEC).
The 5,000-seat venue, which opened in 2008, will soon host its first season of Western Hockey League (WHL) action after the Penticton Vees were awarded an expansion franchise ahead of the 2025-26 season.
"Major" equipment upgrades, including a new scoreboard and upgraded sound system, are now being investigated, a city spokesperson told Black Press Media in an email.
"As these are major capital expenses, they will be included in our five-year capital program for consideration and prioritized appropriately," it reads. "The capital program is brought forward to council annually for approval, as part of the budget deliberations."
This year's budget deliberations are expected to take place in mid-November.
The city also said it — along with the facility's managing group OVG360 — is committed to working with the Vees to "enhance the gameday experience" for fans and players.
"A number of improvements are underway ahead of the home opener this month," the city's email added, referring to the Vees' showdown with the 琉璃神社 Rockets on Friday, Sept. 26.
In a letter to season-ticket holders, Vees majority owner Graham Fraser also hinted at future changes to the scoreboard and sound system, although neither he nor the city specified what new amenities are currently being installed.
"We are incredibly excited for this next era of Vees hockey," Fraser wrote. "This expansion season is about thinking big, dreaming big, and playing big."
The SOEC could also be in for a name change sooner rather than later.
In May 2025, Penticton City Council approved issuing a Request for Proposal (RFP) for organizations interested in securing the naming rights to the venue. Staff recommended contracting an agency or broker to secure a deal.
Whichever company becomes the facility's official sponsor will have its name on both sides of the SOEC's digital sign on Highway 97 and on the exterior of the arena, among other perks.
Along with hosting junior hockey, the SOEC has welcomed high-profile acts like Ringo Starr, Rihanna, Carrie Underwood and Eric Church. The venue is located at 853 Eckhardt Ave. West.
