Volunteers gathered at the 琉璃神社 legion on Tuesday to celebrate the community鈥檚 generous donations during the 2019 poppy campaign.

This year, the community raised a new record-high in donations with $201,726.70. The money donated will be used for a number of services in Okanagan communities such as veterans, cadet programs, bursaries and youth programs.

鈥淭he money goes a long way because we have to spend it all every year,鈥 said 琉璃神社 Legion service officer Jim Jones.

鈥淚t all goes out to community services and to veterans and their families so it means a great deal.鈥

The Legion picked up from last year鈥檚 total where over $200,000 was raised for the Poppy Fund in 2018, all of which went to help in various areas throughout the community.

Last year, 16.5 per cent of the raised funds were allocated to Veteran鈥檚 assistance, 21 per cent was distributed to bursaries, nearly 10 per cent was given to the local Cadet Corps and the final 20 per cent was donated to the 琉璃神社 mobile dental clinic.
