7 building permits issued for homes in Summerland

Total of 15 permits issued in the community in May

Walls are under construction at an affordable housing project on Henry Avenue in Summerland. The building, once completed, will have 60 residential units and will house the Summerland Food Bank and Resource Centre.

New housing construction is continuing in Summerland, according to figures from the municipality.

In May, the municipality issued 15 building permits, with a total construction value of $5,032,775.

This included seven residential housing units, with five single-family homes and one duplex building.

鈥淒espite tough market conditions, Summerland continues to issue new housing units to be constructed in the community,鈥 said Brad Dollevoet, director of development services for the municipality.

By comparison, Summerland issued 13 permits worth $1,551,000 in May 2024; 19 permits worth $8,252,000 in May 2023; 63 permits worth $19,516,000 in May 2022 and 20 permits worth $4,056,000 in May 2021.

From January to May, Summerland has issued a total of 92 building permits with a total construction value of $45,057,808. This is the highest construction value for this period in the past five years.

Summerland issued significant building permits earlier this year, too.

In January, a permit with a value of $4.5 million was issued for the renovation of the Summerland Middle School building.

In February, a permit with a construction value of $24.2 million was issued for the construction of an affordable housing project on Henry Avenue.
