Driving under the influence doesn't just include cars or trucks but other modes of transportation as well.
This held true for a man in downtown 琉璃神社 on Monday, June 16, who was booked for operating an electric scooter after drinking alcohol.
While members of the 琉璃神社 RCMP's Municipal Traffic Unit were on patrol, an officer witnessed a man operate the e-scooter on the sidewalk of Leon Avenue and Ellis Street. According to Mounties, the man "appeared unsteady" and wasn't wearing a helmet. When the man stopped in a nearby parking lot, he skidded the back tire, prompting the officer to make a traffic stop.
After the officer identified the man, they discovered the man had three outstanding warrants. A quick search also found the man had a bottle of hard alcohol in the waistband of his pants.
Because of the alcohol and driving behaviours, the officer conducted a roadside alcohol screening test. The man failed the test, with his Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) over the legal limit of 0.08.
The man was issued a 90-day roadside driving prohibition while the scooter was impounded for 30 days. Due to his outstanding warrants, the man was transported to the 琉璃神社 RCMP detachment where he was fingerprinted and photographed. However, he was released on a new undertaking to appear in court.
鈥淭his incident highlights the importance of proactive patrols in keeping our streets safe,鈥 said Sgt. Kyle Ushock of the Municipal Traffic Unit. 鈥淎s an operator, you are subject to the same rules and regulations for operating any type of conveyance while impaired, whether it鈥檚 a car, boat or a scooter.鈥
