With an annual funding gap of more than $500,000, the South Okanagan Women in Need Society (SOWINS) is once again looking to the community and their generous support.

The third annual Have a Heart Radiothon will take place May 30, on GO 97.1 and Summit Radio, live from Cherry Lane Shopping Centre, where stories of giving and hope will be shared.

While SOWINS is partially supported by government contracts, the charity must raise funds to maintain life-saving services, said executive director Liz Gomes.

鈥淭his is our third year being selected, and we are thrilled to partner again with the incredible Vista Radio team to raise urgently needed funds,鈥 said Gomes. 鈥淭he demand for our services has never been greater, and we need our community now more than ever.鈥

These services include crisis counselling, emergency shelter, 24/7 crisis lines, mobile outreach, and support for children and youth escaping violence across the South Okanagan.

鈥淲e continue to have waitlists for counselling,鈥 Gomes added. 鈥淎nd counselling is at the heart of every journey toward safety and healing. We simply can鈥檛 meet the need without community support.鈥

This year鈥檚 Radiothon goal is to raise $50,000, and thanks to the generosity of two local donors, the first $15,000 in donations will be matched.

The live broadcast begins at 6 a.m. in front of Blenz Coffee at Cherry Lane Shopping Centre. From 7:30 a.m., drive-thru donations will be accepted. Donors will receive complimentary coffee and snacks from Blenz.

Throughout the day, SOWINS staff and volunteers will be at the centre court to answer questions and offer a meet and greet with Dexter the therapy bunny.

All proceeds from the Radiothon directly fund programs that provide safe spaces, counselling, and essential support to women and children experiencing violence in communities from Summerland to Osoyoos, and Naramata to Princeton.
