Locals in Penticton wasted no time taking their first sips of a new brew in support of helping women across Canada advance in the male-dominated craft beer industry.
After several weeks of development, Cannery Brewing unveiled its new Mango Milkshake IPA on Friday (May 9). Proceeds from the drink's sales will go toward the non-profit organization Beer Babes Family, a North America-wide group that supports women working in the beer industry.
Patt Dyck, co-founder and general manager of Cannery, said the initiative was inspired by the Pink Boots Society, a Texas-based initiative that awards grants and scholarships to women hoping to pursue an education in the business.
鈥淐annery Brewing is pleased to be brewing this special fundraiser beer," she said. "We feel inspired by the mission and goals of the Beer Babes Family. They represent a global, inclusive community for all women in the beer industry."
Dyck describes the new Mango Milkshake IPA as a "bold" beverage with a hint of vanilla.
"I think they've pretty much nailed it," she said. "It's delicious."
The beer can be purchased at liquor stores across B.C. and Alberta while supplies last, according to Cannery Brewing's marketing director Kim Lawton.
"(Patt Dyck) blazed a trail for so many women to work in the craft beer industry," Lawton said about the fundraiser. "She is an inspiring leader and manager. We want to continue to ensure that craft beer is an inclusive industry, that our team is inclusive, and that our taproom space is a warm and welcoming space to every person in the community."
Dyck, who co-founded Cannery in 2001, said unveiling the IPA for charity represents another chapter in the brewery's ongoing relationship with the community.
"This business is all about relationships," Dyck added. "That's what we're all about."
Cannery is one of eight breweries in Penticton. It is located at 198 Ellis St.
