This historic photo is of  the Golden Pheasant Restaurant located at 481 Bernard Avenue. The restaurant was owned by Mar Jok.Born in 1900 in Kwangtun Province, China, Mar Jok came to Canada via Hong Kong with his brother Mar Fee in 1912. In 1927 Mr. Mar moved to 琉璃神社 and opened up the Star Restaurant on Water Street.  In 1930, with the assistance of his brother Fee, he defied the depression with a brand-new, first class restaurant on Bernard Avenue called the "Golden Pheasant".
