VIDEO: Brewhalla showcases how Langley became a B.C. craft beer boomtown

Microbreweries are flourishing

On a damp day in May at Fort Langley Park, over at the Smugglers Trail and Trails End table, general manager Jamie MacIntosh was chatting with a visitor.

"We brew, can, and keg all at our brewery just off of 200th Street in Langley, and we have a sister property called Trails End in Fort Langley that's more of a cafe, bistro, and tavern," MacIntosh explained, as dozens and dozens of people lined up for samples from more than 30 vendors.

It was the eight edition of Brewhalla, a well-attended yearly tribute to craft breweries, wineries, cideries and more in Fort Langley that has grown as the number of microbreweries in the community and surrounding Fraser Valley has expanded dramatically over the last six years.

First organized by Trading Post as the Fort Langley Beer & Food Festival, the event has since changed its name and spread to other communities like Chilliwack, New Westminster, and North Vancouver.

Back in 2019, the influential   predicted Langley was poised to become the next "craft beer boomtown."

At the time, there were just two breweries in the community, but four more were being built.

At Brewhalla this year, there were eight from Langley, including Trading Post, Camp Beer Co., Locality Brewing, Brookswood Brewing, Smugglers Trail, Five Roads, Farm Country and Dead Frog, along with Fraser Valley Cider and the Roots and Wings distillery.

Event producer Hannah Brown was at the entrance to Brewhalla, watching people with tickets line up at the entrance to the outdoor show to sample beer, wine, cider, spirits and more as well as chow down at several food trucks.

"The goal is to bring the community together and to celebrate the flourishing craft beer industry that we have here in BC, specifically the Fraser Valley," Brown explained.

"We just want to bring everyone together for a fun day."

The beer boom began in March of 2013, when B.C. liquor laws were relaxed and tasting rooms were finally permitted in breweries.

In addition to an explosion of brew pubs and microbreweries, it led to the Brewing and Brewery Operations Diploma program at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) in Langley City, which started in 2014.

The first program of its kind in B.C., it was "developed in response to the growing craft beer industry and its need for skilled professionals," a KPU online summary says.

At this year's Brewhalla in Fort Langley, Heather Irvine was working at the Trading Post table, undeterred by the damp weather.

"Come get a burger, go get some drinks, and have a good day," Irvine smiled.

Over at the Locality Brewing table, Andy Hamer, who runs it with his wife, Melanie MacInnes, was describing it as a "hyper-local" operation on a multi-generational family farm.

"We grow over 50 per cent of our own ingredients in Langley on the farm, and the rest of it is from B.C." Hamer said.

Langley's booming beer sector has also led to creation of the Langley Loop, a collaboration between the 10 local breweries listed below. Their products are served at the Langley Events Centre at various sporting events.

鈥淭his partnership is about more than just great beer,鈥 said Tim LaHay, with the Barley Merchant. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about bringing the craft community together and showcasing the best of Langley.鈥
