Vernon's North Valley Gymnastics club shines at provincial event

Four gymnasts finished in the top 12 in the province

The North Valley Gymnastics Society (NVGS) flipped and tumbled to a top performance at a provincial competition.

Four Vernon gymnasts placed in the top 15 at the Gymnastics B.C. Championships, held at the North Surrey Sport and Ice Complex from April 4 to 5.

Shayla Flanagan won gold in the all-around level six category, while Willow Kane finished second.

Lily Penner placed 12th in level six, while Nicole Sjoberg took eighth in the level seven division.

"These exceptional performances are the result of hours of dedication and hard work throughout the year," said coach Mira Faour. "Our athletes are also fortunate to have the guidance and support of coaches Kennedy Guilbeau and Brianna Quirt, who have played a pivotal role in their success."

Just over three years ago, the NVGS's facility burnt down, forcing the club to find a new home. The fire displaced more than 500 members at the club, but 琉璃神社 gyms stepped in to house the club鈥檚 competitive team, and the Vernon School District came through with an offer for the club to use the vacant Whitevale Elementary School gym in Lumby.

In 2023, the not-for-profit club moved into their new building, at 4601 Anderson Way, where they have been thriving ever since.
