Dave Lowry is heading back behind an NHL bench, and it is a familiar one.

The former Victoria Royals head coach has been named an assistant coach with the Calgary Flames.

Lowry, 60, brings more than two decades of coaching experience to the role, including stops in both junior hockey and the NHL.

For Victoria fans, Lowry is remembered for his five-year run leading the Royals between 2012 and 2017.

In that span, he posted a 199-112-22 record, while capturing two WHL Coach of the Year awards.

His Royals teams reached the playoffs each season he was in charge, highlighted by a franchise-best 106-point campaign in 2015-16.

Since leaving Victoria, his coaching resume has stretched across the NHL, with stints in Los Angeles, Winnipeg, and most recently Seattle, where he spent the past three years on the Kraken staff.

He also served as interim head coach of the Jets during the 2021-22 season.

The Flames job marks a return for Lowry, who previously worked as an assistant in Calgary from 2009 to 2012 after guiding the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen to a league-best record in 2008-09.

Before his coaching career, Lowry carved out a lengthy playing career of his own, suiting up for more than 1,000 NHL games with Vancouver, St. Louis, Florida, San Jose, and Calgary. He captained the Flames from 2000 to 2002.

The Sudbury, Ont. native will join head coach Ryan Huska and assistants Trent Cull, Cail MacLean, Jamie Pringle, and Jason LaBarbera on the Calgary staff. He replaces Brad Larsen, who is leaving the organization for family reasons.

The Flames have another tie back to Victoria as well. Forward Cole Reschny, who played for the Royals the past two seasons, was selected by Calgary in the first round of the 2025 NHL Draft.
