So far the weather has been good to the fruit trees.
The cherry tree is starting to bloom and it is loaded with buds and the same thing is happening to the plum trees.
The bees are busy going from flowers to flowers in the yard.
Driving around the city, you can see all the blooming trees and the different shade of green leaves just starting to open.
This year, April 22 is Earth Day (below taken from ).
鈥淔or 55 years, Earth Day has led the world in raising awareness and taking action on critically important environmental issues. We advocate for the health of the planet, for our air, oceans, soil, eco-systems, wildlife, and human health.
On April 22, 2025, Earth Day will turn 55, with 192 countries and over one billion people around the globe expected to participate. This demonstrates how the diverse Earth Day movement remains as dedicated today as it was back in 1970 to bringing everyone together for a better future.鈥
One of the suggestions offered on the internet to do on Earth day is to 鈥済et produce from a local farmer鈥檚 market.鈥
Besides supporting area businesses, you鈥檒l also be helping the Earth by buying your fruits and veggies local.
That鈥檚 because food in the grocery stores travels an average of over 2,000 kilometres to get to you, and all that shipping can cause pollution plus an increase of fossil fuel consumption and carbon emissions.
When you buy locally, it鈥檚 transported in shorter distances. Did you ever notice that earth and heart have the same letters. So put your heart in the earth.
Plants are growing very fast with the beautiful weather we are having.
Many kale plants have survived the short winter and I am now harvesting some leaves to add to my salad. Every day I can go out and pick fresh leaves of lettuce, arugula, mountain spinach (Orach), sorrel, radicchio, tatsoy and dandelion leaves. All these have reseeded themselves and some are perennials.
Some of the living lettuce I bought while the garden was sleeping is now growing. After cutting the leaves, I cut off some of the extra roots and planted them in pots. Now they are outside during the day and I will be transplanting them in the beds in a couple days after they have been hardened off.
I can now pick parsley until it goes to seed, oregano and chives. The young leaves of horseradish are also good with only a mild taste.
The lemon balm reseeded itself under the cherry tree. I have a lot of young plants coming up. I was looking on the internet for ways of using it and found this: .
鈥淵ou may want to plant it along the borders of your vegetable garden to entice bees to swing by for a nip and pollinate your veggies, too.鈥
You can find all you need to know about growing and harvesting lemon balm from the above link. Lemon balm is a plant that deer will not touch. I transplanted some last year in the front yard and they leave them alone.
Have a beautiful Easter. Celebrate this holiday with love, peace and forgiveness.
