To the editor:

Canadians experienced a terrible shock when a 30-year-old man drove an SUV into a crowd shortly after 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 26.

I say Canadians specifically as this aspect of the tragedy seems to be missing from the speeches and journalism surrounding this horrible event.

I do understand that it was a Filipino festival attended by folks whose roots are in the Philippines; however, to view this act to violence as only against a specific community is to diminish its consequence.

It is vital to remember that this senseless attack killed and maimed Canadians, our coworkers, friends, neighbours, and fellow professionals. Canadians.

A threat to any sector of our multicultural mosaic is a threat to all of us. It is time we stopped drawing lines around victims, effectively 鈥渙thering鈥 the targets and separating ourselves.

I鈥檇 like us to remember and hold close the sage words of Red Green: 鈥淲e鈥檙e all in this together.鈥
