In what they鈥檝e called a stunning show of community spirit, the West 琉璃神社 Warriors 鈥 with the help of residents 鈥 have raised $6,780 for the Central Okanagan Food Bank.
Last Thursday, the Warriors hosted 鈥楥ommunity Night鈥 alongside several West 琉璃神社 restaurants. The initiative saw the BCHL team donate $10 for each order over $30 placed at one of 11 participating restaurants.
鈥淪even months a year we ask the community to support us and now the community needs our support,鈥 said Chris Laurie, the Warriors鈥 president. 鈥淚 think as the local sports team it鈥檚 part of our responsibility to lift community spirits in times of difficulty and I think we鈥檝e accomplished that.鈥
At least one of the restaurants, C Lovers, reopened specifically for the event and due to the big night they had, have been able to stay open since.
鈥淭hey were contemplating reopening, they just didn鈥檛 know when. I told them this had to be the night,鈥 said Laurie.
Central Okanagan Food Bank CEO Trevor Moss said this donation is incredibly helpful to the community in a time of dire need. He said food bank use has gone up around 28 per cent.
He said as the fundraiser was a West 琉璃神社 initiative, the funding will go directly back into that community.
鈥淭his was a win-win for the West 琉璃神社 community, the West 琉璃神社 Warriors and the West 琉璃神社 food bank,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e were elated just with the initiative and to understand the amount of money that came in 鈥 it鈥檚 such an amazing thing for us.鈥
Laurie said he鈥檚 proud of his community banding together in this time of need to support local causes like this one.
鈥淧eople want to help; a lot of good people that want to step up and do their part to help the community,鈥 said Laurie. 鈥淚f there鈥檚 an initiative that allows them to do that, they will.鈥
