As a local landfill nears capacity, space is being doubled at an area transfer station.
Construction of a new Residential Transfer Station (RTS) at the Armstrong Spallumcheen Diversion and Disposal Facility (ASDDF) begins today, Monday, June 23.
The landfill at the ASDDF is nearing capacity, and construction of a new residential transfer station has been in the planning stages since 2022.
The general contractor for the project, Nixon Earthworks Ltd., will demolish the current four bay transfer station and construct a new eight bay residential transfer station.
A new entrance and exit will also be constructed, and the flow of traffic will be improved.
"If residents plan to visit the ASDDF over the coming months, we encourage them to plan accordingly and follow all posted signage and staff direction," the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) advises.
ASDDF customers will be informed of any service level adjustments as far in advance as possible.
If the ASDDF cannot meet the waste management needs of individual customers due to existing restrictions, North Okanagan residents may use the Greater Vernon and Lumby Diversion and Disposal Facilities.
Construction is expected to extend through the fall of 2025.
"The RDNO appreciates the public鈥檚 patience and cooperation during this transition. During construction, temporary operational changes, service level adjustments, and limitations may be necessary."
