Despite dumping suspected drugs in the Eagle River during a police traffic stop, a Revelstoke man still found himself up the creek without a paddle.

At approximately 7 p.m. on Aug. 19, a Sicamous RCMP officer conducted a traffic stop on Cambie Solsqua Road after the same vehicle had turned away from a police check stop on Highway 1 earlier that day.

"The driver suddenly moved over to the passenger seat while the officer was speaking with him," Sgt. Murray McNeil said in a media release. "The man then exited out the passenger door before running down into the ditch and nearby Eagle River."

The officer could see the man was carrying a bag believed to contain illegal drugs as he entered the river.

"The man dumped the contents into the water before climbing back up where he was arrested for obstruction and drug possession," McNeil added.

The officer seized a small amount of suspected cocaine and over $1,200 from the man's wallet. Additional evidence suggesting the vehicle was being used for drug trafficking was also located and seized.

The 63-year-old Revelstoke man was released with a future court date on Oct. 7 in Salmon Arm Law Courts.
