A Memory Cafe event will be held in Summerland in late May.
The event, a participatory action research pilot project, will take place at the Summerland Library and Summerland Museum on Wednesday, May 28 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event will feature Dr. Juanita-Dawne Bacsu, assistant professor in the School of Nursing at Thompson Rivers University, as the keynote speaker.
Workshops on calligraphy, healing sounds, yoga, harp music and more will be held throughout the day.
Barb Stewart, an organizer of the event, said the activities in the workshops can help those with dementia and can slow the decline experienced by those with dementia.
These measures can also help improve the quality of life for those diagnosed with dementia, she added.
There will also be stories of the lived experiences of people with dementia, as well as from their caregivers.
Stewart said the stories from those with dementia are an important part in understanding its effects.
鈥淚t鈥檚 what builds empathy and understanding,鈥 she said of the story sessions.
