Lumby fire crew members had themselves a busy Wednesday.
Crews responded to two reported blazes in the area, with the first being sparked in the early morning.
According to Fire Chief Tony Clayton, reports of smoke in a wooded area in Lumby came in around 7 a.m.
When crews arrived, they found a small wooden structure with full living amenities.
According to Clayton, individuals were using the area as a retreat.
The fire was not suspicious in nature, but there was difficulty reaching it.
"Only small four-wheel-drive vehicles could reach it," said Clayton. "The fire spread into the brush, but we stopped it before it went too far."
BX Swan Lake Fire Department assisted Lumby crews during the blaze.
Hours later, at approximately 1 p.m., a small blaze started after a presumed bird hit a power line, causing a grass fire.
Crews quickly extinguished it.
"If there is one thing I could say, it is that the public should report the smoke, no matter how small," Clayton explained. "We would rather get up there and turn around rather than not be notified and have to deal with a large fire."
Clayton added that in preparation for the summer, and proclaimed wildfire season, Lumby will be hosting an emergency preparedness workshop on Thursday, April 24 at 6:30 p.m. The free workshop at the Lumby Fire Hall will educate participants on ways to prepare in the event of a wildfire.
