Halcyon Heights launches 22-site RV park between Nakusp and Revelstoke

New recreational vehicle campground with scenic views near Halcyon Hot Springs is taking reservations and offering spots starting May 15, after five years and $2 million in development

Anyone looking for a scenic spot to set up their camper van this spring or summer between Nakusp and Revelstoke is in for a treat, with a new RV park now taking reservations following a five-year and $2-million investment.

Halcyon Heights, a recreational vehicle campground about a kilometre north of Halcyon Hot Springs on the east side of Highway 23, has availability starting May 15.

Along with 22 RV sites, paved roads and free Wi-Fi, the campground offers its Lakeview cabin and suite for visitors without a bed to sleep on, and subject to weather could remain open until as late as the end of October. It lies about an hour's drive from Revelstoke, and 25 minutes from Nakusp.

Other amenities at Halcyon Heights include rinse water taps, 20-50-amp power hook-ups, washrooms and showers, sanitary dump stations, garbage disposal, and for-purchase items such as drinking water, ice and firewood available at the camp store. Bike rentals will also be added to the mix.

"We've been building the campsite for about five years now," said Dan Wiebe, who owns Halcyon Heights with his wife Sandi and estimates they put about $2 million into developing and equipping the facilities. "It's going to be a really nice little campsite."

Wiebe, who hails from Nakusp and has owned the land of the current campground for about 10 years, recounted that it used to sport an RV park in past decades. Over time, the roads became too tight for larger vehicles to turn around on, and buildings were added to cater to non-RV visitors.

Still, "it was pretty much always full," Wiebe recalled, and he hoped to bring back the campground's legacy as a recreational vehicle refuge.

Though not an RV user himself, Wiebe imagines one would want a more private site, adding that many RV parks in the region "cram people in like sardines."

"The nice part about the hill (the campground sits on) is everyone gets a gorgeous view," he added. "If someone wants to go swimming at the beach, it's probably not the campsite for them."

Another draw is that Halcyon Heights offers one site with its own RV for rent, allowing others to save money while also trying the camper van experience.

"Someone that doesn't own an RV can go camping, without the cost of towing and owning an RV," Wiebe explained.

Property manager Jennifer Klassen, who'll run the campground and store full time with her husband Kelvin, was approached last fall by Wiebe about helping run the RV park. She's excited to welcome motorized campers to the area, especially as an RV user herself.

"Our camp overlooks the lake and the mountains," she remarked, adding that Halcyon Heights opened for reservations on April 15, and has already attracted a couple of bookings.

Same-day bookings are allowed, Klassen said, and prospective campers should consult Halcyon Heights' cancellation policy online. Site bookings start at $50.
