Oliver's hospital will see its emergency room close for 18 hours starting Friday afternoon.

Interior Health (IH) says emergency services will be unavailable at South Okanagan General Hospital from 1 p.m. on July 11 to 7 a.m. on July 12.

Patients can access care at Penticton Regional Hospital during this time, the regional health authority added.

IH did not specify why it was closing the hospital's emergency room, however, the facility has had repeated issues with staffing shortages over the last two years.

This will mark the fourth time since Canada Day that Oliver's emergency room has closed.

The department has been hit with a slew of regular closures dating back to 2023, including being forced to close for parts of three consecutive days from May 2 to 4, 2025.

All other inpatient services have continued as normal during this time.

People in the community who need life-threatening emergency care (i.e., chest pains, difficulty breathing, severe bleeding) should always call 911 for transport to the nearest available and appropriate facility, IH said.
