One person is dead and another still missing after three hikers went over Meachen Creek Falls west of Kimberley on Monday, Sept. 1.

RCMP were alerted by a GPS SOS that three hikers had gone over the falls, according to a release from the Kimberley RCMP detachment issued Tuesday.

Frontline officers responded, locating one of the three people halfway down the falls. RCMP also engaged Kimberley Search and Rescue, Bighorn Helicopters and the RCMP's Police Dog Services. A drone was also used in the search.

The searchers found one woman dead and the RCMP are continuing to search for the other missing person. They are also supporting the BC Coroners Service during their investigation.

RCMP say the woman's death is not considered suspicious.

"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased," said a Kimberley RCMP spokesperson.

The RCMP said the three hikers were visiting the Kimberley area from out of town.
