West 琉璃神社 council has followed its 琉璃神社 Regional Transit System (KRTS) partners in approving fare increases.
琉璃神社, Lake Country, Peachland, Regional District Central Okanagan, and Westbank First Nation are all on board with the price hikes.
鈥淭he cost for various aspects of the operating program has increased over the last ten years, and the fares haven鈥檛,鈥� Mayor Gord Milsom noted at council鈥檚 July 22 meeting. 鈥淪o I believe that it's responsible to support the increase鈥therwise our taxpayers are paying a greater deficit each and every year, and I don't think that's appropriate.鈥�
Fees are increased between 14 and 51 per cent, depending on the product.
BC Transit
The city鈥檚 2025-2026 Annual Operating Agreement with BC Transit shows an expenditure budget of $2,786,945 and represents an increase of $157,454. However, this amount also includes a prorated amount of $73,409 for the expansion of hours of service for Route 97 starting in January 2026. Other budgeted increases are mostly due to increases in vehicle lease rates, according to a staff report.
Coun. Garrett Millsap asked the BC Transit representative who presented to council when the debit and credit card tap will be available on transit buses, and was told that a pilot project is coming in the fall or winter. However, no date has been set for the KRTS.
Millsap also asked that BC Transit look at providing more benches at bus stops in the community, pointing out that many transit users bring their own lawn chairs.
鈥淭his will increase ridership,鈥� he said. 鈥淲e see it when we put in proper bus stops where people can go and feel safe and sheltered.鈥�
The new fees take effect on Oct. 1.
