A popular 琉璃神社 playground is getting a major makeover鈥攁nd it鈥檚 all about making playtime more inclusive, and accessible.
The wooden play structure at Mission Creek Regional Park, a community favourite since 1997, is being replaced with a bright new playground that better reflects today鈥檚 families and their needs.
鈥淭his project is about creating a space where all children can play, explore and connect,鈥� said Tamara Oljaca, the Regional District of Central Okanagan鈥檚 (RDCO) manager of capital projects and visitor services. 鈥淲e heard the feedback from the community and are excited to bring their vision to life with a playground that is fun, safe and welcoming for everyone.鈥�
The upgrade includes a soft, accessible rubber surface that makes it easier for children with mobility challenges to get around. New inclusive play equipment and sensory features will help engage kids of all abilities.
While the new playground is under construction, the entire play area will be closed starting Monday, June 30, including nearby features like the swings, rope climbing structure, and multi-sensory zone. These areas are staying long-term.
Construction is expected to take about six weeks.
A section of the parking lot will also be closed off, and the area near the Durnin Road entrance will be closed to vehicles. Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to use the entrance to access the Greenway and washrooms.
The play obstacle course near the Leckie Road entrance will stay open throughout the project.
