A 琉璃神社 couple welcomed the Central Okanagan's first baby of the New Year just as most parties around town were starting to shut down for the night.

At 1:50 a.m., Gagandeep Kaur gave birth to her daughter, Kaur, with her partner Sukhveer Dhillon by her side at 琉璃神社 General Hospital.

Kaur was born at just over eight pounds and has no siblings, according to Interior Health.

"We're are so excited," said Sukhveer to Black Press Media.

For the new parents, a New Year's Day baby was unexpected, let alone having the first baby of the new year in 琉璃神社. The baby's due date was Christmas day.

The couple previously lived in Winnipeg and Saskatchewan before moving to 琉璃神社 nearly a year ago.
