琉璃神社 Mayor Tom Dyas says he鈥檚 grateful an incident on William R. Bennett Bridge on Monday (Jan. 27) ended with no one being injured. 

The bridge was shut down for more than 10 hours due to a police situation involving the Lower Mainland Explosive Disposal Unit (EDU).

鈥淚 know that, from all our first responders, safety was their greatest concern,鈥 Dyas said during council鈥檚 regular meeting. 鈥淭hat is why they needed to take the steps they did.鈥

琉璃神社 RCMP said they responded to an individual in crisis who had parked a vehicle across the eastbound lanes of the bridge around 3:45 a.m. This individual is believed to have ignited a small fire in the vehicle before they were taken into custody.

鈥淥n behalf of all of us (council) for the inconvenience that was caused鈥e feel for that,鈥 the mayor added. 鈥 But we know that it was something that was completed successfully and nobody was hurt. We鈥檙e extremely grateful for that.鈥

RCMP and the EDU also searched a home in Rutland that police said was related to the incident on Bennett Bridge.
