An armed man in Clyde River, Nunavut, was shot and killed in a dispute with police on Thursday.

Police responded to a report of multiple shots fired from a residence on July 24 at approximately 9:42 p.m.

A "shelter in place" alert was issued for the community.

"When police arrived on scene, they were confronted by an adult male with a firearm. As a result of a confrontation with the adult male, shots were fired. The male is now confirmed to be deceased," reads an RCMP news release issued on Friday morning.

The RCMP have dispatched additional resources to Clyde River to aid in the investigation and to "ensure that all evidence is being secured."

The Mounties noted that an external police agency will be selected to lead the investigation since one their own officers will be a subject in the probe.

No further details will be released at this time, the RCMP added.
