Okanagan residents have the chance to learn more about the Gaza-Israel conflict, with a renowned film screening in 琉璃神社.

From Ground Zero鈥擲tories from Gaza will be shown at the Metro Hub in 琉璃神社 on Friday, April 11, from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

"From Ground Zero mixes dramatic storytelling, documentary, animation, all genres of cinema to make this one of the most compelling films you鈥檒l see this year," said executive director Michael Moore. "Working with whatever tools they were able to pull from the rubble of their homes and their cities, these filmmakers have come together to share these stories with us."

The screening is a collection of 22 short films, created by talented filmmakers from Gaza. The initiative was born against the backdrop of conflict and aims to provide a platform for young artists to express themselves through their craft.

Each film, ranging in length from three to six minutes, presents a unique perspective on the current reality in Gaza, in an effort to show how art can thrive even in the darkest times, showcasing enduring spirit and creativity that emerge amid ongoing devastation. Aware that the film needs to be seen by everyone, the filmmakers keep violence and bloodshed off-screen, even if it is impossible to keep the worst horrors wholly hidden.

From Ground Zero was the Palestine Academy Awards submission, and it was featured at the Toronto International Film Festival, Boston Palestine Film Festival, DC Palestinian Film and Arts Festival and the Middle East Now Official Selection in Florence, Italy.

The screening is being hosted by Amnesty International Okanagan, Canadian Justice for Peace in the Middle East (CJPME) Okanagan, Central Okanagan United Church and the Okanagan College Faculty Association鈥檚 Human Rights and International Solidarity Committee.

CJPME's goal is to be the premier advocacy organization for Canadians to empower all backgrounds to promote justice, development and peace in the Middle East and at home in Canada.

"Given the breaking of the ceasefire and the aid blockade by Israel it is even more timely and necessary for the stories of the people of Gaza to be heard," said CJPME's Debbie Hubbard. "The film is naturally difficult to watch. However, the people of Gaza do not have the luxury of turning away or taking a break and for that reason, their situation deserves our attention."

Following the screening, a live Q and A with Palestinian filmmaker and producer Rashid Masharawi will take place. Also included at the event will be booths for Amnesty International: Okanagan and CJPME: Okanagan, along with chocolate from Peace by Chocolate and Palestinian olive oil and Za'atar.

All proceeds from the ticket sales will go to the fund. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance on or at the door.
