International Overdose Awareness Day will be marked by community organizations from throughout the Okanagan at 琉璃神社鈥檚 Kerry Park on Sunday.

Indigenous elders and community leaders, hoop dancer Jay Genaille, and drum group Signal Point will honour the event.

Speakers include Helen Jenners from Moms Stop the Harm, Corrinne Guerra Mella of Reclaiming Our Ancestral Roots Society (ROAR), and 琉璃神社 city councillors. Community outreach organizations will be on-site to share knowledge, support, and explain their roles.

鈥淲e are here to say the names of those we have lost,鈥 Guerra Mella said in a statement. 鈥淭o remember their laughter, their struggles, their stories, and to stand together so that no more names are added to that list. This day is more than an event鈥攊t is a sacred responsibility, a circle of remembrance, a call to action, and a space of love.鈥

The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 31 at Kerry Park.
