May the fourth be with you to help a local organization.
Independent Living Vernon holds its annual Moving For Independence event Sunday, May 4, and participants are asked to attend in force, and "dress to impress," as prizes will be handed out for the best Star Wars-themed costumes.
Two legs, two wheels, four wheels, it doesn't matter. The event helps raise funds for Independent Living.
"We ask those that take part to even just walk a block, if that's all they want," said Lisa Briggs of Independent Living Vernon. "We have lots of people that take part in wheelchairs, and on bicycles and skateboards. We ask that people do what they can do."
The registration fee is $25 but that's waived if a participant raises $100 or more in pledges.
Kids 12 and under take part for free.
Registration begins at the People Place parking lot at 9 a.m. May 4. Movement starts at 9:30 a.m.
One route is a 24-kilometre bike ride along the Okanagan Rail Trail and back.
The other route is the 11-km Family Fun Ride or Walk, which heads toward Okanagan Landing and back.
The registration fee includes lunch from Pizza Pizza, coffee and doughnuts from Tim Hortons, a massage from the students at the Okanagan Valley College of Massage Therapy, and a gift bag with presents from local businesses.
Proceeds from the fundraiser go toward the peer support program for youth with disabilities, aimed at helping youth gain their independence.
The organization hosted its 25th event in 2024.
