Peter Schumann's family is set to receive a prestigious award in his honour.
On May 1, Big White Ski Resort announced that Schumann, the former president and owner is the posthumous recipient of the Jimmie Spencer Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by the Canada West Ski Areas Association (CWSAA). The award is for individuals who have made a lasting impact on the ski industry through exceptional leadership and service in senior management, ownership, or consultancy roles, according to Big White.
Schumann started his career at Mount Hotham in Australia (where he was from) in the 1970s before moving to B.C. in 1996 and helping make Big White what it is today. He died unexpectedly on Aug. 27, 2022.
鈥淲hat an amazing honour to see this Jimmie Spencer Lifetime Achievement Award bestowed upon Peter Schumann,鈥 said Big White CEO and President Peter Plimmer. 鈥淧eter dedicated his entire life to the ski industry鈥攆rom the early days at Mount Hotham in Australia, to joining Big White in the 1990s after his father, Des Schumann, purchased the resort. After moving with his family to Canada in 1996, Peter led many of the major developments and upgrades that have driven Big White鈥檚 growth and success. And he did it while being a champion and friend to the people who worked for him.鈥
Through is career, Schumann had his hand at big projects at Big White like the Village Centre Mall, Kids' Centre, the installation of Gem Lake lift, upgrading lift infrastructure and extensive real estate growth, with over $100 million in new accommodations during peak off-seasons.
He retired in 2013 where he was succeeded by his nephew, Plimmer.
